This was a virtual reality project that I did for my final year project. It runs on android device and can be controlled with a PS4 controller. It's probably the first project I created myself via Unity3D, applying User Centred Design approach.

Intro

Day by day, the number of motorcycle crashes has been increasing rapidly, currently, it is at a critical level. Based on a research made by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (United States) on 2010, among all motorcycle accidents that involve motorcyclist and cars, 80% of the cause of the accidents are not the rider's fault or caused by other car drivers. This means that the riders need to prevent themselves from involving in such potential crash scenario at the first place.

Objective

The objectives of this study are as follows:

  1. To identify common causes of motorcycle accidents on public roads.

  2. To design motorcycle crash scenarios in virtual environments.

  3. To develop an immersive virtual reality application.

  4. To evaluate the usability of the app

Problem statement

  1. Lack of awareness on cause of motorcycle accidents among motorcycle public road users.

  2. Current method of raising awareness on riding safely are dull and boring (pamphlets, brochures and talks).

  3. It is difficult to understand and visualize motorcycle accidents as it is too fast or too gore to watch for younger audience.

Scope

This research focus on a mobile application for Malaysia's public road motorcycle's users. The target user will be motorcyclist who aged 16 years old and above considering they understand the English language. This application will be developed on android platform.

Take away

This project was completed in 2015, it was just a concept way before people know what Virtual Reality is and household brands like Apple released a product like Apple Vision Pro. Thus the tools and product understanding was very scarce. It is far from perfect but have trained me to build new innovative products and helped me be confident at identifying innovative market trends.

Based on the usability testing evaluation of VR-MOTOSEUM, this application is satisfying, easy to use and easy to learn. However it got low score on usefulness. It is a great application for motorcycle riders to understand and visualize the cause of motorcycle accidents. A lot more research and visual improvements need to be done to make sure it is an actually useful product. Additionally to make it a reality, some business analysis are required.
